What Are Self-Reliance Centers? Self-reliance centers provide Internet access, mentoring, and other helpful resources to job seekers, the self-employed, and prospective students. Stakes establish self-reliance centers in Church buildings; they are staffed by missionaries and volunteers. A self-reliance center may share a location with an existing family history center. Services Offered Self-reliance centers are a resource available to stakes and districts. When a member of the Church is not self-reliant, a bishop and the ward council can refer him or her to a self-reliance center. These centers are places where returning missionaries, unemployed or underemployed members, and others struggling with self-reliance can receive assistance. The centers are also a resource for quorums and Relief Societies who work closely with members struggling with self-reliance. In centers, members receive guidance that will help them learn practical steps to become self-reliant as well as doctrines of self-reliance. Self-reliance centers offer services on topics such as: How to start or grow your business How to find employment How to gain a good education Personal mentoring Networking opportunities When you first arrive at an employment or self-reliance center, you will be greeted by a friendly missionary who is there to help you find your way through the initial registration process. Whether you want help finding a job, gaining additional skills, or starting a business, those who work in the employment or self-reliance center will be able to help you. Regardless of whether you are just starting out in your career or are a seasoned professional, the staff can direct you to information and resources to meet your needs.
Root for Kids, formerly know as The Learning Center for Families was developed under a grant to serve infants and toddlers with disabilities in Washington County, Utah. The grant was originally funded by the Utah Department of Health, Division of Family Health Services. Root for Kids continues to grow and has provided over 15,000 families in Washington County and the Arizona strip with the extra support they need. With the investment from the community and generous donors, Root for Kids was able to expand its services and help more families than ever before. They strive to ensure that every child in the community has the skills they need to excel in school and in life. Research has shown that the years from prenatal development through 36 months of age provide a window of opportunity for enriching infant/toddler development that can provide lifelong positive outcomes. But for many infants and toddlers, this crucial time can also be a period of heightened vulnerability due to stresses such as poor health, developmental complications, poverty and/or less than optimal home environments. Families who face these difficulties often need help navigating their challenges. Root for Kids offers several programs to ensure the success of our youngest, most vulnerable members of our community. Root for Kids was honored as the HVCC March 2019 Business of the Month.
