Hurricane City Police Department Honored as HVCC November Business of the Month

The Hurricane City Police Department is made up of 29 full-time officers consisting of the Police Chief, Patrol Division, and Investigations Division. Additional assignments include School Resource officers, Traffic Enforcement Officer, 2 K9 Officers and Washington County Drug Task Force Officer. The officers patrol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Hurricane Police Department patrol area is roughly 55 square miles and includes residential, commercial, industrial, recreational, open space and farmland.

The department works hard to make sure their officers are trained and have the equipment necessary to do the job. This ensures both the officer’s safety and the safety of the citizens they faithfully serve. The department has established monthly in-house training for all officers to ensure that a basic standard of competence is met. The officers are trained in de-escalation of situations, CIT, communication, Utah State Law, gang identification, first aid and CPR, DUI enforcement and drug identification. Officers have current certifications in firearms, taser, OC (pepper-spray), radar and intoxilyzer.

The Hurricane City Police Department encourages community involvement. The officers conduct tours of their building for community and school groups, Coffee with a Cop, assist with Bike Rodeos and Hurricane Heroes; as well as provide traffic control and law enforecement support for the many events that occur in the City.

The department recently implemented a Back to School shopping program to provide school clothes and supplies for school aged children in need. They participate in the Shop with a Cop Christmas project, escorting area children to local stores to shop for themselves and their family during the Christmas holidays, and organize, assist, or participate in a multitude of other community programs and events.

Hurricane City law enforcement officers encounter dangerous situations daily, yet continue to serve, determined to keep the community safe and protected. As first responders, they experience horrific scenes and heart pounding situations, which undoubtedly cause them many sleepless nights. The Hurricane Valley Chamber of Commerce and an entire community is forever indebted to this valiant group of people and are honored to pay tribute to the entire department as the November Business of the Month.
