Thinking of Relocating... Although all of Southern Utah has been greatly affected by the poor economic conditions during the last couple of years, the region is in the process of working toward recovery with several lessons learned. The area is sure to recover faster then most areas in the United States because Southern Utah continues to be a big attraction to both individuals looking to relocate as well as businesses that need a dependable workforce with a variety of skills. Many businesses are attracted to the area because of the mild, snow-free climate, the proactive business-friendly government, interstate access, electrical power costs, developed commercial and industrial facilities, and the many recreational opportunities for their employees. The area boasts a reliable workforce with a strong cultural background that has the opportunity to attend a local state college offering multiple 4-year degrees. There are a variety of businesses that have relocated to the are recently, including manufacturers, distributors, electrical power generators, pharmaceutical researchers, data centers, and customer service centers. A replacement St. George airport makes access to the area for both residents as well as business travelers much easier. The replacement airport, completed in January 2011, is able to accomodate larger jet aircraft capable of carrying passengers to regional destinations. The new airport is five times larger than the old airport and is helping to spur long-term economic development, not only in areas adjacent to the airport but also for all of Southern Utah. The St. George Ironman Triathlon had its first event in Washington County in May of 2010, and the vent will continue for many more years. The event proved to be an economic success to the area as not only did it bring in athletes, but spectators as well. Many of these individuals who came to the area for the first time because of the Ironman will be back to visit in the future, supporting the tourism industry. The Hurricane Valley features several industrial parks that are very business-friendly. The Gateway Industrial Park, located at exit 16 just off of Interstate 15, features several large distributors including Walmart and Orgill. The Fiargrounds Industrial Park is in a newer developed area in Hurricane, where Wheeler Machinery has already been located for a couple of years. The Fairgrounds Industrial Park is located in the same area as the Washington County Fairgrounds as well as the under-construction Red Hills Raceway. These newer developments are not only a sign of the confidence that businesses have inthe area, but also indicative that the area will continue to grow despite national economic challenges. |
